An agreement between Toyota—a Japanese-based multinational automotive producer—and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) has been recently broadcasted. The agreement has been reflecting the prospect of collaboration on international space exploration. However, Toyota has not contributed enough after setting a proposed design for a pressurized; fuel-cell that will generate power to drive Lunar Camry.
Toyota will manufacture a car loaded with extreme features to make it feasible for driving in space. Based on the design, the car would be equipped with six wheels, air-tight interior, and will be able to travel a distance within a range of 10,000 Kilometers/6,312 Miles.
This type of range is significant as the vehicle that Toyota and JAXA have been visualizing and studying mutually is actually more than just an automotive working as a camper in the space, similar to the earlier models of Apollo rovers.
Akio Toyoda—President of Toyota—also stated in brief about the purpose of the project.
The front facing of Toyota’s rover design is fairly similar to the earlier-launched very-popular model of Toyota, the FJ Cruiser.
Dimensionally, the planned car would be around 18 feet in length, 12 feet tall, and width of around 15 feet, with an interior capacity of 459 cubic feet that would be sufficient for two astronauts, an in emergency situations, it can even accommodate four.
However, along with the fuel cell as a power source, the design model also shows the installation of solar panels, which is also a good concept, as in space sunlight is an unlimited source of energy generation, which can be used to recharge the batteries or for any other practical purposes.
The trapezoid-shaped modules will be used to store consumables along with oxygen and hydrogen tanks to operate the fuel cell.
After consuming hydrogen and oxygen for power generation, the fuel cells can also release clean drinkable water as a by-product. But it is not sure that the water produced by fuel cells would be sufficient for the crew.
